How To Stop Impulse Buying

For some people, buying compulsively can be a way to improve their mood or to help them feel empowered. They’re basically addicted to shopping and that means they get a rush out of buying new stuff. The uncontrollable urge to spend money, often on items that are unnecessary, it’s the act of buying that makes these people feel good. Based on my own experience and conversations I’ve had with others, here are a few steps you can take now to put a stop to compulsive spending:

  1. Recognize the problem. Sometimes just simply understanding your impulses to buy compulsively can help you take control of the urge. When you recognize that you have a problem you give yourself the power to stop.
  2. Track your spending. There may be a few impulsive buys that are must have. However, be honest with yourself and question whether or not you really need the item. Once you begin to track your spending, certain patterns will become clear. When you see the patterns, you can then act on them.
  3. Cut up your credit card and shop only with cash. The idea here is to only spend money that you have. This will also prevent you from spending money on television shopping networks or ordering from catalogs with a credit card.
  4. Refrain from shopping when you feel angry, lonely or depressed, as these tend to be the times you will shop compulsively in an attempt to boost your mood. Overspending will only make you feel worse in the long run.
  5. Avoid temptation. If you’re a music love, then stop going to the record store. The best way to avoid spending money is to stop going to places that you tend to spend money. Avoid the places where you would normally spend.
  6. Ask for help. Beating an addiction can be tough when you’re going it alone. Seek support from your friends and family. Many counselors and self-help groups can help you with this problem.
